What it is

The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is a nationwide rail pass exclusively for foreign tourists visiting Japan on a short-term visa, offering unlimited travel on almost all JR trains — including most shinkansen bullet trains — for 7, 14, or 21 consecutive calendar days. It comes in two tiers: Ordinary (standard seats) and Green Car (first class). Since a roughly 70% price increase took effect in October 2023, the pass pays off most clearly for multi-city itineraries covering long distances across Japan within the validity window.

Highlights

• Covers virtually all JR trains nationwide: shinkansen (bullet trains), limited express, express, rapid, and local trains across Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
• Free to board Hikari, Sakura, Kodama, and Tsubame shinkansen without supplement; Nozomi and Mizuho (the fastest trains on the Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu lines) require a separately purchased supplement ticket.

Good to know

• Eligibility is limited to foreign nationals entering Japan as a Temporary Visitor — the stamp or sticker must physically appear in your passport. If you use an automated immigration gate at the airport, no stamp is applied; you must visit a staffed counter to get one before exchanging your pass.
• Nozomi and Mizuho trains are not included in the base pass fare. Since October 2023, pass holders can ride them by purchasing a Nozomi Mizuho supplement ticket at any major JR station ticket office — the surcharge is the same regardless of seat class.
• Exchange your voucher at a designated JR ticket office (available at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai airports, and major city stations). You can set any start date up to one month from the exchange date — once the pass is issued, the start date is locked in.
• As of 2020, the JR Pass works at automatic ticket gates; insert the pass into the slot, then retrieve it on the other side. Where you also hold a seat reservation slip, show both to staff at a manned gate.
• After October 2023's ~70% price hike (7-day around 50,000 yen / 14-day around 80,000 yen / 21-day around 100,000 yen for Ordinary class), individual tickets may be cheaper for simple point-to-point trips. Use a rail pass calculator to verify your specific itinerary before buying.
• The pass is most cost-effective for wide-ranging itineraries — e.g. Tokyo to Kanazawa to Kyoto to Hiroshima to Hakata within 7 days — or for travelers who value unlimited spontaneous boarding without buying individual tickets each leg.
