Good to know
- Eligibility is limited to foreign nationals entering Japan as a Temporary Visitor — the stamp or sticker must physically appear in your passport. If you use an automated immigration gate at the airport, no stamp is applied; you must visit a staffed counter to get one before exchanging your pass.
- Nozomi and Mizuho trains are not included in the base pass fare. Since October 2023, pass holders can ride them by purchasing a Nozomi Mizuho supplement ticket at any major JR station ticket office — the surcharge is the same regardless of seat class.
- Exchange your voucher at a designated JR ticket office (available at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai airports, and major city stations). You can set any start date up to one month from the exchange date — once the pass is issued, the start date is locked in.
- As of 2020, the JR Pass works at automatic ticket gates; insert the pass into the slot, then retrieve it on the other side. Where you also hold a seat reservation slip, show both to staff at a manned gate.

- Can I use the JR Pass on Nozomi shinkansen?
- Not for free. Since October 2023, JR Pass holders can ride Nozomi (and Mizuho) trains by purchasing a separate Nozomi Mizuho supplement ticket at a JR ticket office before boarding. The supplement fee is the same for all seat classes and varies by distance. Without paying the supplement, you must use the slower Hikari or Kodama services on the same line.
