What a Coin Locker Costs, Station by Station

Lockers are priced by size tier, so the same suitcase costs roughly the same anywhere — the variable is whether a large one is free. Sizes run SS (a daypack) to LL (a checked suitcase upright).

• Subway lockers undercut JR. At Ueno the Metro tiers sit ¥100–¥200 below the JR ones for a comparable box. If both are a short walk apart, check the subway concourse first.
• Peak seasons cost more. MultiEcube M and L units add ¥100–¥200 during busy periods, so a ¥700 locker can ring up at ¥900.

• Charges are usually billed by calendar day rather than a rolling 24 hours, so an overnight stash generally costs two days.

When the Big Lockers Are Already Taken

The failure mode isn't price, it's availability — L and LL units at the big stations tend to be gone before lunch on weekends and holidays. Three ways around it:

• Reserve in advance. JR East stations use MultiEcube: pick a station, date and size up to a month ahead, with live availability shown online. Shinjuku lists a ¥500 per-locker reservation fee on top of the rate.
• Use a shop-based service. Cafés, shops and hotels near major stations take bags through app-based cloak platforms: book a slot, walk in, staff tag the bag. Rates are set per bag per day by each host and vary, so check the quoted price in the app first.
• Ask your hotel first. Most Tokyo hotels hold luggage free both before check-in and after check-out. If your day starts and ends near the hotel, this beats every paid option.

Skip the Locker: Same-Day Delivery from Haneda

If the bag doesn't need to be with you at all, send it. Yamato Transport runs a same-day service from Haneda counters to hotels, turning an arrival day into a train ride with a daypack.

• Size is the sum of the three dimensions, so a standard 27-inch suitcase lands mid-range rather than at the top.
• Miss the 11:00 cut-off and it becomes next-day delivery — fine if you're staying two nights, useless on a one-night stopover.
• Delivery address matters. Yamato states that Airbnb-type lodging and convenience stores cannot receive these shipments; a conventional hotel front desk can. Compensation is capped at ¥300,000 per shipment.

What to Do With the Day You Just Freed Up

The pattern behind all of this is simple: the less you carry between 09:00 and 15:00, the more of Tokyo you actually see. A locker buys you a few hours, delivery buys you a whole day.

That freed-up day is usually filled with a subway-heavy loop or a timed observation-deck slot, both easier to book before you land than at a counter with a suitcase beside you.
