Which Octopus Card to Get

Octopus sells two broadly different things, and the choice depends less on price than on what happens at the end of your trip.

• Current prices, deposit amounts and refund handling terms are set by Octopus Cards Limited and change from time to time — check the figure on the official product page before you commit, rather than trusting a number from an older guide.
• Adding Octopus to a phone is possible and is how most residents pay, but setup depends on your handset and card issuer. For a short visit, the physical card avoids the risk of finding out at the gate that your phone isn't compatible.
• Top up with cash at any MTR station add-value machine or convenience store counter. Top-ups are in fixed denominations, so add what you'll plausibly use rather than a large float.

Airport Express Fares and What Octopus Changes

The Airport Express is the fastest way in, but it's also the one journey where the fare is worth a moment's thought — it costs several times a normal MTR ride.

• If you're arriving late, budget for the last train at 00:48; after that it's a taxi or the overnight bus network.

Where Octopus Works — and What It Won't Do

Octopus is close to universal for transport, and much wider than transport, but there are still gaps worth knowing before you rely on it.

• Buses and trams don't give change, so the tap-to-pay convenience is real rather than cosmetic — paying cash on a tram means having the exact fare.
• Octopus readers appear in places you wouldn't expect, including some vending machines and building access points, which is why residents rarely carry notes.
• Card readers on minibuses vary by operator and route. On the green minibuses in particular, having a small note in your pocket is the safe assumption.

Refunds, Leftover Value and Going Negative

A few things travellers get caught by at the end of a trip:

• Leftover value on a sold Tourist Octopus stays on the card. If you expect to return to Hong Kong, that's fine; if not, spend the balance down at a convenience store on your last day.
• On-Loan cards are returned at MTR customer service centres, not at machines, and the counter has to be open. Don't leave it for the moment before your Airport Express departure.
• Refund terms depend on how long you've had the card, and a handling charge can apply in some cases. Check the current terms on the official page rather than assuming.
• Negative balance is allowed once, which is deliberately designed so you can always tap out of a station — but you'll need to top up before the next journey.
