What it is

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan (海遊館), opened in 1990 in the Tempozan Harbor Village area of Osaka's Minato Ward, is one of the world's largest aquariums and a landmark attraction on Osaka Bay. The building is designed around a single massive central tank representing the Pacific Ocean — 9 meters deep, holding approximately 5,400 tonnes of water — that is visible from every floor. Visitors ride an escalator to the top level, then walk a continuous downward spiral ramp through 15 themed habitat zones modeled on ecosystems along the Pacific Ring of Fire, from the Japan Forest at the top to Antarctic penguin colonies, jellyfish galleries, and Arctic seal enclosures lower down. The aquarium is home to whale sharks, Aleutian Islands puffins, Monterey Bay sea lions, Ecuador rainforest arapaima, Great Barrier Reef fish, loggerhead sea turtles, Japanese spider crabs, and much more. The Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel stands immediately adjacent, and the two attractions are often combined in a single half-day outing.
