Changi Airport to the City: Every Option Compared

MRT and bus fares are adult card rates in force since 27 December 2025; times are official SimplyGo and Changi Airport estimates.

• Tap in before 7:45am on a weekday (not a public holiday) and the MRT fare drops by up to S$0.50.
• MRT and bus times exclude waiting, and bus times exclude traffic.

MRT: One Change at Tanah Merah, Last Connection 23:18

Changi Airport station (CG2) connects directly to T2 and T3. From T1, take the free Skytrain (05:00–02:00) or walk through Jewel; from T4, the free shuttle bus to T2 runs every 5 minutes from 06:00 to midnight.

1. Ride two stops to Tanah Merah (EW4), about 11 minutes.
2. Change to a westbound East-West Line train towards Tuas Link. Riding time from the airport: Bugis 29 min, City Hall 31 min, Raffles Place 33 min.
3. For Orchard (36 min, S$2.30), change again, for example to the North-South Line at City Hall.

• First and last trains: the first train leaves at 05:31 Monday to Saturday and 05:59 on Sundays and public holidays. The last one connecting to the city-bound line leaves at 23:18; later trains (last at 00:06) connect only towards Pasir Ris.
• Other route: Changi Airport also lists a change at Expo (CG1/DT35) to the Downtown Line towards Bukit Panjang.
• Closures: LTA shut Tanah Merah–Expo for rail works on 14–17 March 2026, with Shuttle 8 buses instead, so check LTA or SMRT notices before you fly.

Paying: Contactless Card, EZ-Link or Tourist Pass

Paper single-trip tickets were phased out on the East-West Line in March 2022. Buses still take cash, but only the exact fare, since no change is given.

• Contactless card or phone: Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay all pay the adult card fare. Foreign-issued Visa and Mastercard carry a S$0.60 admin fee per day of travel, not per ride. Maestro and Cirrus debit cards are not accepted.
• Same card, same mode: don't tap in with the card and out with your phone. A mismatch shows up as a missing exit on one and a missing entry on the other, and each incomplete MRT trip is billed a flat S$2.50.
• EZ-Link card: S$10 at the station ticket office (S$5 non-refundable card cost, S$5 travel credit). Changi Recommends stores and the station's Passenger Service Centre also sell it.
• Singapore Tourist Pass: unlimited basic buses and trains for S$17 (1 day), S$24, S$29, S$37 or S$45 (5 days), sold at the station's T2 ticket office (8am–9pm) and its T2 and T3 kiosks (5am–midnight). One day costs more than seven airport fares, so it only pays off on heavy sightseeing days.

Taxi, Grab and Landing Late

Taxi stands are in every terminal's arrival area. At ComfortDelGro and Strides, the meter starts at S$4.60–S$4.80 for the first kilometre, then:

• Airport surcharge: S$8 from 5pm to 11:59pm daily, S$6 at other times.
• Peak (+25% of the meter): weekdays 6am–9:29am, weekends and public holidays 10am–1:59pm, daily 5pm–11:59pm.
• Midnight (+50%): 12am–5:59am.
• Card fee: both operators add 10% for credit-card payment.

Ride-hailing pick-up points are signed at T1 Basement 1, Doors 1–12; T2 Level 1, Doors 2–7; T3 Basement 1, Doors 1–5; and T4 Level 1, Doors 4–8.

Changi's 24-hour Ground Transport Concierge sells its flat-fare cars at counters in each arrival area (T1 basement Arrival Pick-up, T2 by Door 6, T3 and T4 next to the information counter); Changi's shuttle page lists no shared hotel shuttle. To settle everything before you fly, a pre-booked private transfer meets you with a name sign and is priced per group of up to nine.

Landing late: after the 23:18 last MRT connection, bus 36 still leaves T2 until 23:58 (00:04 on Saturday nights), signed 36A from about 23:00 but on the same route into the city. Then it's taxis, ride-hailing or the concierge car, and a 1am taxi adds 50% to the meter plus the S$6 surcharge.

Got an Hour? Jewel on the Way to the Train

Jewel sits between T2 and T3 and opens straight off the T1 arrival hall. From T2 it's a 5–10 minute walk over the Level 3 link bridge near the MRT station, so it barely lengthens a city-bound trip. Canopy Park on Level 5 costs S$8 at the standard rate and opens 10am–9pm Monday to Thursday and 10am–10pm Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, with last entry 30 minutes before closing.
