Chiang Rai White, Black & Blue Temple Day Tour from Chiang Mai

This guided day tour departs Chiang Mai early in the morning for the roughly 3-hour drive north to Chiang Rai province. The first stop is typically Wat Rong Khun — the White Temple — a privately funded contemporary Buddhist art installation by national artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Its ubosot (ordination hall) is covered in white plaster and mirrored glass chips that shimmer in the sun, and you cross a bridge lined with reaching hands symbolizing desire before entering a surreal interior mural featuring pop-culture icons alongside Buddhist imagery. Next up is Baan Dam, the Black House museum — a sprawling 40-building complex designed by artist Thawan Duchanee that blends Lanna architecture with dark, animist aesthetics and collections of animal skins, bones, and unconventional sculpture. The final temple stop is Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple, completed in 2016 by artist Phuttha Kabkaew — a student of Kositpipat — featuring an electric-blue and gold vihara with giant Naga serpents flanking the entrance and a pearl-white Buddha inside. Many itineraries also include an optional stop at the Golden Triangle (where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet) or a Karen hill tribe village, depending on the operator.
