What it is

Rising 105 metres above the Gulf of Thailand, the Sanctuary of Truth (Prasat Sut Ja-Tum) is one of the most remarkable structures in Southeast Asia. Begun in 1981 and still being carved by hand, this all-hardwood seafront monument is built entirely without metal nails — interlocking teakwood and other native hardwoods using centuries-old Thai joinery. Every surface is covered in densely layered carvings depicting Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, celestial beings, and ancient philosophy. Visitors don a provided hard hat and explore the cavernous interior and breezy seaside grounds, with optional boat rides, cultural dance shows, and horse activities rounding out the experience.

Will the Sanctuary of Truth ever be finished?: Intentionally, no. The founder designed the project as a living artwork — carvers repair weathered sections and add new work continuously. The ongoing construction is part of the experience, which is why hard hats are required.
