What it is

Alishan National Scenic Area is a 415-square-kilometer mountain reserve in Chiayi County, widely regarded as one of Taiwan's top three scenic destinations alongside Taroko Gorge and Sun Moon Lake. A guided day tour typically departs from Taichung, Chiayi City, or Kaohsiung and winds up the famous Alishan Highway (Provincial Highway 18) — a long mountain drive through switchbacks and subtropical forest that gradually transitions to cool temperate woodland. Once inside the recreation area, tours walk the Giant Tree Trail past over 38 documented ancient trees, including the 2,300-year-old Xianglin Giant Tree (the current 'Sacred Tree'), towering Formosan cypresses (hinoki), and Taiwania conifers. Depending on the itinerary and season, tours may also stop at the historic Alishan Forest Railway station, high-mountain Oolong tea plantation viewpoints, and Zhaoping or Chushan sunrise platforms. The area sits at high elevation, so temperatures are noticeably cooler than the plains even in summer — pack a light layer.
