What it is

The Umeda Sky Building is one of Osaka's most distinctive landmarks — two 40-story towers completed in 1993 and designed by architect Hiroshi Hara, connected at their summits by a circular ring housing the Kuchu Teien (Floating Garden) Observatory at approximately 173 meters above ground. Getting there is an experience in itself: after riding elevators from the lobby, you transfer to a glass-enclosed escalator that carries you through open air across the gap between the twin towers — reportedly the world's highest suspended escalator system — before reaching the 39th floor. The observatory spans three levels (39F, 40F, and the open-air rooftop), culminating in a 360-degree outdoor viewing deck with unobstructed panoramas over Osaka, Kobe's mountains, and on clear days, distant peaks. After dark, the 39th floor hosts the Lumi Sky Walk, a walkway embedded with phosphorescent stones that glow underfoot like a star field, transforming the space into something markedly different from a daytime visit. Named one of the world's top 20 buildings by The Times in 2008, the Sky Building remains a standout both architecturally and as an observation experience in Kansai.
